It took a while for me to start rooting for the characters because they came across so unlikable. In "The Job Club", where they basically acted like children in school, or when they ruined Gerald's interview - although it did turn out ok. The stealing and everything... such a bad example for a kid (who really shouldn't have to help his father become a stripper). But they grew on me, especially Dave. All in all I ended up loving it, for making characters so flawed and real and make me like them. 8/10, will reccomend to my friends - except the ones who are to prudish haha
I don't know whether to be proud or terrified. Perhaps both.

This is an extremely well done comedy. I know, the characters have flaws, etc. etc. etc. but it took a lot of talents to make such a great movie like this. IMHO erotic is the last thing this movie is about and is that last thing the viewers think about.
Hilarious and well done. Made me think of Spike in Notting Hill (also a British way). Besides the funeral of Rick in Northern Exposure (US) I haven't seen anything such hilarious. reply share
I don't think it came across the lads were lazy in the job club, I think it boiled down to the fact. They'd been job searching for some time and probably got fed up in finding there was nothing going. Funny thing is, nothing changes twenty years on there still isn't a great deal of jobs going for Brits, if there is any its probably poor wages and poor hours and you'd probably be better off earning more money on the dole. All the good jobs have already gone and if there replaced, they'll only go for someone with qualifications in every subject. Also with foreign labour coming in, they work for really low shocking wages and employers rather go for them. No doubt some of these foreign workers are very good, but some barely speak English and sometimes you can't understand how they get job but a person who is English and speaks good English can't. Also foreign ownership only want foreign workers. Some people call English workers greedy, but rely on good wages in order to pay all these taxes that government keep banging on us. Sorry about that I've gone on a little rant.
On the characters you do feel sorry for them, they've got no job, no money and currently low in confidence and seriously depressed. Bugging up Gerald's interview was mean but they were getting revenge on the years when they were treated like s h i t by him. However in the end they did give him a big favour.
I agree with you, job economy was shoddy even before the recessions kicked in. Being long term unemployed makes you feel worthless and the limited resources the govt have at the dole club isnt much help, because its so hard to find work I had a supervisor once whos English was atrocious, no one could understand him, that job could have gone to someone who at least spoke the language. Migrants work for less money and greedy employers pay them the lower wage, yet they moan like hell about people on benefits. Gets to me too. Sheffield's steel empire really went downhill when they closed all the factories, hence the high rate of unemployment there in the film
