I really liked this movie, but it would have been much better if I could have understood more of what they were saying. It wasn't so much the words as it was just the accents.
Any other Americans have this problem?
Their accents weren't THAT strong but the more films you watch set elsewhere in England the more you'll enjoy them.

Not a problem for me, really, but I've been exposed to far too much British cinema and television programs to be bothered by it. Too much Doctor Who for my own good.

Yes, the accent fooled me, but I can read from the subtitles much of the time, and it is still the best way to stick to their own accent(s), instead of uttering in American one--on purpose.
shareI rely on subtitles, too! I even used them when I finally caught up to The Sopranos in a DVD marathon. A lot of mumbling New Jerseyans, hard to catch everything they said, too.

sharei don't think the OP was saying they expect that - i think they were saying they would have enjoyed the movie more if they understood everything that was said.
i completely agree - the first ten times i watched this movie, i caught something uproariously funny that i had missed before. i'm finally at the point where the only thing i don't really get is what Gaz shouts to Nate about a 'girly bra' when he drops him off at school - but it's more the reference i don't get than the words.

Eric Cantona was the star footballer of the moment when the film was made. Gaz is just trying to make Nathan laugh, trying to keep things going with him. Their relationship is the most touching thing in the film, IMO.

When I saw it at the theatre I laughed but did miss a lot of the phrases. I bought the movie and turned on subtitles and that way I knew everything that was being said.
I looked up some of the terms. But one thing I did not understand was The Arsenal Off-Side Trap.
I had to look that up and found out it was NOT a dance move at all. Arsenal is a famous soccer team and Tony Adams is a soccer star! and the off side trap was a soccer play!

He probably had as much trouble as you and he was the lead actor!!
I can understand most of it with the sound way up, and all of it with the sound down (to the level I would for Americans) and very good subtitles. It is a little like translating from a foreign language as there is a slight delay between what you hear and what you realize has been said.
