Jackie Brown and Boogie Nights both came out in 1997
And neither one of them were nominated for Best Picture. Those were the two best movies of the year and two of the best I've ever seen. L.A. Confidential is just as good and came out that year too. Along with Titanic, Good Will Hunting, As Good As It Gets, The Full Monty, Amistad, The Sweet Hereafter, Wag the Dog, and Donnie Brasco. That was a very strong year for films. There were also an amazing amount of great action movies that came out that year too: Face/Off, Con Air, Men in Black, Starship Troopers, The Lost World: Jurrasic Park, The Fifth Element, and Air Force One. Even a lot of the failures were pretty interesting that year. You can find most all the releases here:

I think 1997 was the best year for movies in the history of cinema. Seriously. Maybe its because I was 16 in 1997 when I went to go see all those movies, but all these movies are still many of my favorites.
