Is there a scene missing?

I watched the VHS version of this movie and have a question. When Alex is sitting in the restaurant toward the beginning of the film, he has about 20 plates of food sitting on the table, when obviously he is there by himself. WHY?

Was there supposed to be a scene before that that explains this? Or are we supposed to assume they're there because he doesn't speak Spanish and didn't know what to order? I was confused watching it.

Are there deleted scenes on the DVD that might answer this question?

Later in the movie he states that "he couldn't decide between a burger and a tuna mels (I could be wrong on the foods, but something along those lines..) I think we are supposed to gather that outside of hos work, Alex is lost and can't make decisions for his own life until he meets Isabel...

Alex is testing out foods for the club he's working on. That's why there's so many plates; if you look closely, you can see him try something and then make a note in a notebook.

Close, but right before that he is on the phone talking about a chef that they are trying to woo away and be the chef of the new club. His partner says something like, it's a family restaurant and he'll never leave. But Alex says he's going to get him. So that is why he has all the plates, he is sampling the chefs foods

I've heard of jobs like this, and although he may have mentioned other things at the beginning of the movie, he was actually trying to decide which dishes would be excellent to serve at the new club. You actually see a scene where some lady comes to him in opening night, saying there is some trouble in the kitchen. There really is a job like this were you have to try dishes of what is considered popular and enjoyable in different locations.

What the hell did you do to your haaaand?

If this was a hoity-toity restaurant, the principle food preparer would be a chef. But this is a busy-on-Friday-and-Saturday-nights, beer-sloshin good ole Mexican restaurant. The principle food preparer is a cook. Probably a GREAT cook based on the crowd.
