Gag Prop / Easter Egg (Spoiler Alert)

I froze the DVD in the scene in the hotel towards the end where Yance comes close to killing himself @ 1:39:54. He's looking at the letter from the state commending him for his work in the boot camp. At the bottom of the sidebar (the lower left hand corner of the letterhead) is a "motto".

It begins, "Of the people, by the people, and for the people is a completely outdated phrase. What we really hope to achieve is 100% incarceration by the year 2015."

I can't make out the rest but this HAS to be a prank. Perhaps a jibe by the filmmakers at the government for the ridiculous sentencing laws that result in our country having the highest incarceration rate in the world?

I stopped the movie during the final minutes in the scene where Greg Yance (Omar Epps) had the gun and he was drinking and also had the letter out on the table in the room he'd rented for three hours. I saw what you said the boot camp letterhead said on it. It also said that Herbert Fong was the stink bomb. I was like, "WTF?"

I saw in the credits where the real life Greg Yance was the guy who challenged Pookie to a drag race when Omar Epps' Greg Yance character was in the car with him. That was interesting to find that out, that the drag racer guy was the real Greg Yance.

For some reason, I liked Pookie's character, though even though Greg was determined to turn his life around, and Pookie seemed more determined that he was not going to try to stay out of trouble for his own sake like Greg did, and Pookie eventually wound up getting shot to death. I felt sorry for Greg as Omar Epps played him, when Pookie was killed. He was trying to be a good example to his friend the best he could. Of course I wonder what all that was about when the guy said Pookie "snitched" on him. It was never explained in the movie. And I've seen that Byron Altman guy somewhere else before...just can't remember exactly where.

"I'd be very happy to be myself if I could remember who I am. Who am I?"

When Greg & Pookie are on the porch talking, Greg asks Pookie how he got out so soon.

Pookie answered that he knew about a drug deal that was going down, so he told them what he knew. Basically, he cut a deal with the prosecutor for a shorter sentence.

Someone on the inside likely heard about it and word got back to the drug lord or gang boss that Pookie was a snitch.
