possessed the whole time (his lifetime), committing the murders and going to court, jail and then executed? He would have touched a lot people between murdering and dying, why did Azazel only leave him when he was executed? After that Azazel possessed dozens of people in a short time.
I'm sure Azazel moved in and out of Reece during his killing spree, but stayed with him 'til the end because he was in fact caught by a mortal. He wanted to try to get inside Hobbes because of the fact he caught him, then he couldn't by touching him, his conventional method of moving hosts, because Hobbes was a more righteous man than most. This in turn makes Reece want to torture him, which unfolds the rest of the movie.
But it also never says in the movie he "must" move when he touches someone, it's only if he chooses, so that's why being escorted by the guards and put into the chair he didn't leave Reece, because he wanted Hobbes to see him die as Azazel. Also, just a theory to something that's never explained, letting Reece become whoever he was in in previous human life just before he was executed would probably arise more suspicion (though that would be pretty sadistic in itself) because all of a sudden he'd be like "what the hell am I doing I didn't kill anyone" and there's be a split personality concern that dozens of people would witness, but in that case, it would be more apparent to Hobbes later on about the demon being able to move from body to body to all of a sudden see Reece turn back to his former self. Or Maybe Azazel just liked the attention :)
