I believe that is the right answer. As it was suggested, Azazel became obsessed with Hobbes not only because it was fun toying with him and eventually destroying him completely, but Hobbes became invested in learning more and trying to stop/kill Azazel. Azazel felt 'threatened' and such took action.

I don't think so. There was basically no way out for Hobbes once Azazel laid eyes on him. Remember, he tried to possess him before Reese was executed. When he couldn't though, this was the next challenge for Azazel.
