At the end, goodman is shot and dying, and Denzel smokes the poisoned cigarette. Then after he knows the poison is working, he shoots Goodman allowing the demon to enter his body.
My question is, after shooting Goodman why didn't he just shoot himself in the head? It may not have worked anyway because of the cat, but wouldn't that make more sense?
If he wasn't quick enough then the demon enters his body the moment Goodman dies and Denzel doesn't get the chance of pulling the trigger on his own head.
Yes, we know it takes a little while for him to travel but it's a hell of a risk. Plus, lighting up a poisoned cigarette seems an easier way to go then pointing a gun at your head and shooting. Hesitate and the demon wins.

shareI don't understand why he couldn't just run the 1/6th of a mile after shooting Jonesy. He had plenty of time. It takes less than 3 minutes to walk that length so compare that with running. Sure, the damned cat would've ruined everything but still.

It would have been cool though; pace out the distance accurately. Then stand just beyond the demon's range and take a piss or something.
shareHe didn’t know how fast the demon was. Remember, they said that not everyone can be possessed, depending upon how strong the will to resist is. But when he is body-less, he is much stronger. Therefore, he might have out ran Denzel for his body. It’s a hell of a risk, as others have pointed out, and then he’d be that much closer to society.
@OP, the guy before Denzel did try that. He killed his friend, then shot himself. But the demon survived, obviously, just like he did this time too.
