I don't get the backstory of Denzel's family. Is his brother retarded? Did he used to be a druggie? Did he kill himself or did Azazel do it? This was such a distracting plot device.
shareHe's a bit slow, not a druggie, which is why Denzel was living with him. Azazel killed him with poison in the syringe (how he usually kills his victims), which is why Hobbes used the same poison for the cigarette at the end.

The saddest part of the movie was when Art died. And when he asked Hobbes if he was mad at him for going to the crime scene. He was so pure of heart. :(

I didn't feel he was distracting, it gave background to the character of Hobbes & showed why Hobbes was as 'kind' as he was.
The actor that portrayed him did a superb job, he was so heartbreaking.

I think Art had some sort of brain injury. Early on he mentions something about Sam's mother leaving when he's feeling guilty about living with John. That leads me to believe that he once was a normal guy with a normal life and at one time was capable of taking care of himself.
Not that it's impossible for someone who is retarded to be in a relationship and have a kid, but why would he suddenly have to live with John if this was his mental capacity his whole life? It seems like something devastating happened.
Why the mother would leave the kid behind with someone with diminished capacity is strange, but there could be plenty of reasons to explain that too. Perhaps they were in some sort of accident and she died from her injuries which is how she "left" them.
