shareYes, jumping into the cat's body allowed the demon to escape.
But that brings up another question: what kind of animals can he jump into? I mean, they were in a forest, so there had to be plenty of animals around. At least closer than the distance Denzel could have run between the time he shot Goodman and when he would have bled out.

Yeah, you actually see him travel via cat earlier in the film. Also the cat from the end is seen when Hobbes arrives at the cabin the first time. Was interesting seeing these things setup the second time around (even if it was 15 years later).
People don't like to be meddled with.
