So Sean Archer win Time Magazine's Man of the Year?

Can someone explain this...

Victor Lazarro: Sean? Look, we're friends. So I'm going to tell you face-to-face. I don't give a damn if you are TIME's Man of the Year. After last night's bloodbath, I am terminating your war on terrorists. [Castor's eyes flash with rage]
Castor Troy: Is that because I'm getting all the kudos, and you're not?

It's probably my favourite throwaway line in a movie, and I only picked up on it after I watched Face Off for about the 8th time last night.

How often do cops, even supercops like Sean Archer, get nominated for something like that? I think it's awesome, and actually makes the even better for me.

Yeah, true. I wonder if Time invalidated his 'Man of the Year' status after the whole crazy face swapping story came to light. Or maybe they decided it was a wash and just let him keep it.

I think you're taking that line very literally. I always assumed Lazarro meant it as an hyperbole, an exaggeration. He might as well have said: "I don't give a damn if you've just been knighted by the Queen. After last night's bloodbath (...)" or I don't give a damn if you've just been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. After last night's bloodbath (...)" and so on. Lazarro was alluding to Archer's recent exploits, and his subsequent adoption of a big shot persona as no excuse to act in such a reckless way.

Yes, this. To assume it was literally is too far-fetched... I mean, even too far-fetched for a movie that involves face-swapping.

WHICH COULD TOTALLY HAPPEN.

Exactly, well said.

I have a feeling the general public never finds out about the face swap and that the terrorist was posing as an FBI agent, that would be quite the embarassment.

I'm not sure if the man of the year comment was serious or tonge in cheek but if you consider Troy to be one of the biggest domestic terrorists the USA has ever known then stopping him from destroying L.A. is indeed quite the accomplishment.

As much as I want to believe that's true, there are a few things that make me think Sean Archer was literally Time's Man of the Year.

First, given the ridiculousness of the story as a whole, I don't think it would be a stretch to think that would be the hyperbole. They are making a story about a man undergoing an experimental surgery for a top secret mission to a get information from a prisoner on a floating secret prison.

Second, when Sean diffuses the bomb, he comes out to a press conference where dozens of reporters are waiting for him. The interview was broadcast so wide that it was played in the Erewhon prison.

Third, Castor responds directly to the comment by saying Lazarro is jealous he's getting the accolades. So Archer/Castor IS getting commended by someone, and Lazarro is the only person (as far as I can tell) who outranks Archer within their organization. Unless it's the President pinning a medal on him, why couldn't it be Time magazine?

I think this can be true and Archer literally being Man of the Year be true at the same time.

The secretary earlier in the scene said that Archer was "on the cover of time", they simply did an article on him, he wasn't times man of the year. I took that scene as Lazarro saying that it didn't matter how much positive publicity Archer got, he could have been Times Man of the Year for all he cared, he was still going to "terminate his war on terrorists".
