Read the book. Its exceptionally well written. But to answer your questions (Im trying to remember all the specifics because its been at least a decade since I read it but here ya go)
1. Joe Pistone did step in to save someone but not overtly. He would be the one to deliver the beating to save a dude from getting killed. This happened with the club owner who gave up fake diamonds. But it wasnt Lefty who was going to kill him, it was another psychopath named Tony Mirra. Pistone beat the guy up because Mirra was definitely going to stab him.
2. Yes Sonny Red et al were gunned down similar to this but Pistone wasnt there. He was in Florida at the time.
3. No Nicky Santora was not whacked. He is still alive and got out of prison in 2009 according to wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Santora
But like I said, read the book. Its significantly different than the movie, especially in terms of Pistone. In my view, its much better than this mediocre movie. share
