Irish Insult?

Looking at billy burke's surname i would assume he was irish-american (i might be wrong!!), so why did he insult brad pitt's character by calling him an "irish mick hog"? It sounds like to me he was insulting the fact that brad pitt's character was irish, but why would he do that if he was irish himself?
It was just wierd!!

I presume it was for the same reason that Black people sometimes use the common ethnic slur on each other. I won't go any further than that. Capische?

The insulter was Italian.

Italian? What the hell are talking about? He was Irish American and he called him a "Bog Irish Hick". I'm American and I call people from the back woods of Appalachia a hick. Basically the same thing. And an American of any background can call a person from any other country a derogatory name even if it is where their ancestors are from. I do it. Its fun!

When you think about it Billy Burkes parents probably emigrated to The US because of the poor state Ireland was in for many years, I doubt if he would have been raised with stories of a rich and prosperous land. His opinion of Ireland being a hick infested bog is probably reflective of the life he led growing up being called similar names day in day out by so called natives...

I grew up poor, but in the city, I can still call people from the the back woods hicks. By the way, how did it happen that you posted about this somewhat obscure movie from the 90s less than a day after I did?

reply

That's so funny I just happened across it while I was going through my old posts and I noticed your post and thought "who's still putting up posts about this movie"
