Why is this movie under-appreciated?

I believe this movie should be a classic on TV. But why is it that it doesn't get much attention when it should? The movie adds a pretty good factor to an already basic story. In other words, terrorists find their way to a cruiser to steal or blow it up, but they end up discovering that their priorities have changed. The creature that was added was incredible by the way and the CGI was moderate. But the movie was good when the terrorists are on the run. I gave it a 10.

I guess its because it doesn't have an A-List cast and when it was initially released it was poorly marketed (in my opinion). I still think the CGI is some of the best from the 1990's, better than most of the cartoony crap you see nowadays and the whole thing is played for laughs. It easily ranks as one of the best b-movie monster movies ever made and the best film Stephen Sommers ever made, yes, even better than 'The Mummy'.

reply

Absolutely! The CGI was not even considered a problem from my pov. The monsters looked awesome. But why not A-list cast? Those guys were A-list in my eyes.

But that is a big claim to say this film is better than "The Mummy", and I agree. But look at how "The Mummy" has now turned into a classic on all the movie channels. They constantly show the movie just like they do for Jaws. But where is "Deep Rising"? Sigh

I think this is great entertainment, it's not going to win any awards but is still a good movie. The cast were spot on, a great bunch of characters playing potential octopus food. It's not original but fun, I love movies like this so I can switch the brain off and eat popcorn to. Lake Placid, The Relic, The Ghost and The Darkness - all good.

Treat Williams was a blast.

Had a pretty good cast. Famke Jannsen from Goldeneye and later Nip/Tuck. Treat Williams, Wes Studi, Anthony Heald. Er....the guy from Lord of Illusions. Always thought Bruce Campbell should have been fit in somehwere.

reply

It's because people don't like cheesey fun movie and they want real life movies. It's really sad. I'll take a fun b-movie over boring real life stuff.

This is a very underrated badass flick

i also give it a 10

The rating on IMDB is way too low. I don't even like horror yet I enjoyed this film very much.

A straight out action-horror flick just like the Mummy. But no love angle or redeeming values so the IMDB people and critics didn't like it. A shame cause it is very entertaining -- I think the only drawback is Treat Williams -- he is a true B-level actor. Check every movie like this he has been in (The Phantom is a perfect example and others) and you will see a underachieving film. Add that to his long list of TV work and I think no one takes him seriously. I don't mind him, but his appearance is not a plus in any movie I have seen. Nonetheless, have it on DVD and watch it from time to time.

It is awesome on all levels. This is, in my opinion, one of the most re-watchable movies ever. Deep Rising has more than any monster movie enthusiast could hope for, alien level suspense, an insane monster and wonderfully murderous marauders to feed to it. Treat Williams plays the gruff cowboy well, and we even get a comic relief and a wicked crazy ending to boot. Sure it's stupid, but it has a great cast, and it's also stupidly inventive. I would say this might be the perfect B movie for the last two decades, and it deserves to recognized for its rollicking insane brilliance.

Its a film that bombed in the box office and the lead actor is not a household name but its a fun film.

Its that man again!!

I haven't seen this movie all the way through since the late 90's. It was pretty fun.
