can someone explain to me

...it made good money and it was entertaining

Unfortunately that's only half correct. It IS a great film but for some stupid reason moviegoers didn't go see it in theaters and it bombed

Thought I was havin' trouble with my adding. It's all right now

I agree. It was a good film, but it failed at the box office. Doing a sequel would be very risky..

I'd be careful what I wish for, honestly. I'm glad I own the DVD, but a sequel would most likely have a different cast (everyone's fifteen years older now), a different writer and director, and end up being a SyFy "Original" movie. I don't think anyone would want that.

agreed. Deep Rising is aweesome and one of those puzzling films that has gotten horrible reviews and reputation over the years, bombed at the box office, but was quite high quality and had great effects for its time.
a sequel however would be too dangerous to do WELL because it would not be anyway possible to get the sort of budget the first one got (and that was in the 90s) nor would it have the same cast nor would it likely have the creative/filming genius the first had.
the sequel won't happen but even if it did, it would be done so cheaply it would'nt be worth it
let's just enjoy a classic beautiful action-horror film that we have
what is unbelievable is how few 'GET' this movie
doesn't deserve the ratings it has

If i go crazy will you still call me Superman?

I was just thinking the exact same thing. This is one of a few movies I wish they did make a sequel to.

I spoke to Sommers once and asked about a DR sequel - he thought it was hysterical that after all the movies he's directed people he met all over the world still recognize him as the director of Deep Rising. He didn't bag on it, and said that the script for a sequel was written years ago, never financed and was essentially the same as the first season of Lost. Considering that he managed to stretch decent B-movie mojo across two Mummy movies, it's a damn shame he didn't get a crack at monster island.
