The story about the Jewish woman who finds out her husband murdered four people with an ax start out at a Bar Mitzvah (sp?) with a Star Wars theme.

Yeah, the scene at the end has all the characters from all the stories throughout the movie honouring Harry. The band at the end are the same band from the Star Wars Bar Mitzvah in the axe murder story.

O.K., but why are the people at the Bar Mitzvah all wearing Star Wars costumes? Is it one of the typical Allenian ironies against Judaism?

reply

I'd say so. It's Allen's having a bit of fun with the whole religion and culture thing. When one's religion -- in his case Judaism -- begins to mirror crass popular culture, well, what's left but to satirize it?

Remember – as Harry tells his sister, they're all exclusionary clubs: they tell you who to hate.

Well, one thing also to note is that "Annie Hall" beat out "Star Wars" for best picture in '78, so that could have something to do with it.

reply

^^^ I doubt that because Woody could care less about the Academy Awards.

Simple answer.. When the elderly ladies are chatting, one of them reveals to the other that her husband has a DARK SECRET. I love the way the wife insists on finding out what this dark secret is.

So basically the Star Wars scene would be referring to Darth Varder and the dark side of the force.

Bingo!!

Jewish people love Star Wars. I know because every Jewish person I've met, especially young Jewish boys, are crazy about the series.
