...really be in LE in any capacity?

I would think they would all have to have hearing in both ears.

In small communities, where the pickings are slim, folks who aren't even fit for junior high ROTC frequently end up on the police force. Thus, what's depicted in Cop Land is hardly unrealistic

While that may be true having missing hearing in one ear is a disfigurement or perhaps even a disability.
Only way to know is if having hearing in both ears is a requirement to be on any kind of police force.
I would think it is even if it is for a po dunk town.

Well, he was Sheriff in Cop Land (Garrison, NJ) for reasons that had nothing to do with his hearing or law enforcement abilities.

NYPD wouldn't take him.

Is this realistic? I don't know, Ive never applied to be a policeman.

My personal opinion is there is no way you should be a cop if you have no hearing in one of your ears.
