Who saw this in cinemas back in 97?

Who saw this back in the day? What were your memories - the anticipation of seeing it in the weeks/days before, the actually seeing it and how much a big deal was it where you were back then, the crowds, audience etc and after coming out of the cinema what were your thoughts and in the days/weeks that followed...

I did, I was 13. I was amped up. I remember the preview with DeNiro going, "We Gave You A Chance and You BLEW IT!" Lol... I love this film. One of the more underrated/least known film on this board. Acting outweighed any dull plot moment in my eyes. I wasn't disappointed

It wasn't sold out though, actually like a half to 2/3 house in a smaller theatre

I was to young to understand any of it, remember the cinema was almost empty but some guy decided to come sit directly next to my father who didn't like it haha

That was real? I saw that movie, I thought it was bullsh*t

reply

i did was only 11 or 12 but was good. first stallone movie i saw at the movies.

I was teenager and went to see Copland with my cousin, I didn't have much expectations because I knew that Sly was just some overweight sheriff and this is not an action movie. Then at the movie theater lobby I saw picture of Stallone holding shotgun and thought maybe this has some action after all. It didn't have much but I enjoyed the movie anyway. There was not much audience that day, maybe 20 people.

For those who saw it in 97, did anyone else think it was shot it was set in the early 90's or late 80's. Granted this is my first time watching this, but it aged horribly. The styles of clothing and the cinematography, make it look like it was shot pre goodfellas.

reply

It was set in 1997 obviously. Maybe it has aged horribly, we all are.

They are supposed to look middle class/lower middle class with mostly older cars and cheap WalMart clothes. Cops aren't particularly rich and I think they wanted the film to look "gritty".

Yippee kay yay, Mr. Falcon!

reply

Yeah. I think the production designer did a great job. It certainly is intentional in its lower class atmosphere.

Even the more rural type of brown police uniforms, they are chosen because they look less exciting than the NYPD city uniforms.

And Deniro's matted down hair style. Love it.

Not only did I see it in the theater, I was the head projectionist at the time and put this movie together. I had found out about this movie after putting the trailer on Face/Off during the summer. It wasn't at the theater long, didn't get very many people to see it. I love this movie a lot, but honestly, the thing I will always remember most about it was when I caught people having sex in the theater while this was playing.

Saw it in 97 and immediately thought it was Stallone's best performance since Rocky. Surrounded by a top flight cast including DeNiro, he upped his game and tutned in a doozy. Surprised he wasn't Oscar nominated. Completely underrated film and performance. This one still holds up.

Had high expectations for this film and was majorly let down. The cast is great and does what they can with it but it ultimately missed the mark. Feels unfinished.
