Center of our Galaxy is How Far??

James Woods' character (Kitz) says the center of our galaxy is 26 lightyears away. Wikipedia says it is 25-28 THOUSAND LIGHTYEARS AWAY. Who you gonna believe?

reply

The 26 light years is the distance to Vega, not the center of the galaxy.

You got your mind right, Luke?

ncdwbmk6,
I know it is the distance to Vega, but I'm sure Kitz called it traveling to the center of the galaxy.

Michael Kitz: You admit that you very well may have hallucinated this whole thing.

Ellie Arroway: Yes.

Michael Kitz: You admit that if you were in our position, you would respond with exactly the same degree of incredulity and skepticism!

Ellie Arroway: Yes!

Michael Kitz: [standing, angrily] Then why don't you simply withdraw your testimony, and concede that this "journey to the center of the galaxy," in fact, never took place!

reply

The journey consisted of several legs, the first leg to Vega, and ending near the center of the galaxy. The book makes that clearer.

Okay. I didn't catch that from watching the movie. Must have found a wormhole shortcut or else Jodie would be 56,000-years-old.

waitaminit... Vega is another galaxy, right? and Ellie ends up back in our milky way galaxy? Not exactly A to B travel, especially if you go to Q F H first?

ok... wasn't sure if it was another solar system or galaxy... at least Eliie stayed in the milky way; now of course never answered is who may have made this transit system.

He was using "center of the Galaxy" as a figure of speech. As hyperbole to make her story sound all the more absurd. He could've used "center of the universe" to the effect.

Seeing how scientists have never actually traveled the galaxy nor have they accurately measured it with a ruler not to mention, much of their accuracy is questionable, you might as well trust James Woods.

25,000 light years
It's about 100,000 LY across
