So...was Ellie's dad an alien at the end?

Just wondering.

reply

No that was the form the alien took

reply

They used a life form from her memories she would be familiar with. They felt it would seem less threatening to her.

Better than a one eyed purple creature with tentacles.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

I think Ellie was sophisticated and intelligent enough to handle seeing a real, deal purple, 6-eyed, scaly alien. However..... that would have destroyed the whole theme about faith v. scientific proof. The movie was an allegory on religion and faith in general. The ending was meant to leave us with doubt, and test our notions about belief and truth.

The book goes into greater detail: the aliens appear in the form of the single individual the particular passenger (there were 5 in the book) loved and trusted most in their lives.

There was much speculation that Drumlin (who was a dick in the book much as he was in the movie), had he gone, probably would have met a perfect carbon copy of himself.

lol meeting with himself? That would be kinda weird.

Man...do people really not pay attention to anything?

I don't mean to offend, but watching the movie pretty much tells you EXACTLY what is going on.

Ellie says to "her dad" that he can't be real. She then says something about how they must have accessed her memory, as the beach was based on her memory of Pensacola, Florida and "her father" using the normal terms of endearment he used when he was alive.

"Her dad" says that they figured it would make it easier to accept.

This isn't like a 10 second scene. It is pretty much the entire scene on the alien beach.

I hate IMDB's Signature policy...

Everything in this movie is explained to the most dumbest common denominator. No offence. The chars explain everything to the viewer, as if the viewer sat there with them.

I own you.

reply

The only thing that calls that into doubt is one of the last things "her dad" tells her, which is that she has her mother's hands. Her mother died giving birth, so she would have no way of knowing that and an alien who had already admitted to not being her dad would have no reason to say it.

reply

Her real dad could have easily told her that during his lifetime. For all we know it was something he said every week.

Yeah otherwise there's nothing debatable about this whole scene. She's talking to aliens who are using her father's image to communicate. It's not her real dad.

Really....

reply

YES, it was using the likeness of her father to make communication more comfortable.
