Take this all on faith... this line in the movie.

They believe all that on less proof than what they had about this alien contact. They got the blueprints. They build the machine that bends gravity it's obviously not designed by man. Science is not religion.

This movie oooozes irony with lines like that. Which no doubt went right over the head of the devout

I found it especially interesting that Mathew Mconaghey who in real life is a god botherer, plays a religious role, and Jodie Foster who in real life is an atheist plays a similar role in the movie. Even if Jodie was not gay this was an extremely unlikely pairing that had no chemistry on screen and would not be plausible in real life.

I found some of the lines condescending. "Did you love your father?" "Yes". "Prove it"

Love can be demonstrated in a number of ways, the existence of any God cannot.

The inquiry panel suggested that the blueprints (and the signal from Vega) were actually orchestrated by Haddon. He was a leading engineer, it's possible he did it to get the governments of the world to foot the bill for his latest experiment - which they all believed didn't work because they saw the pod simply drop through the rings. The inquiry panel are looking for hard evidence and aren't prepared to take Ellie's version of events on faith. Much like she couldn't accept the existence of God on faith by those who believed in him. Do you see what the film was trying to do?
