Ellie was tricked
I think this whole movie is a double turn around. Ellie never went into space, she was tricked and by hadden. The sudden new transport system build by the japense, the fact that she would be the first person in it. When the other guy got the chance to use it someone was sent to blow it up. Some force wanted Ellie on that trip. It was hadden who wanted to make an impression on a young high strung scientist. Don't doubt what you misunderstand.
