re: sound quality on internet purchases

I've just bought this film from YesAsia.com and I found the dialogue sound to be very distorted. I sent it back for a replacement, but that's just the same. Is that how the film is supposed to be? It sounds like the actors are talking down the wrong end of a telephone. I would be grateful if someone could let me know as soon as possible because I need to know whether to send the DVD back again. Thanks, I'm most obliged.

That is the sacrifice you must make, legal copy but more expensive, or cheap illegal copy from YesAsia.com with crapy sound/quality?

You really have no right to complain, you took the later, get over it, why don't you buy a legal copy next time and let artists get paid for their work?

reply

MEOW! Put your claws back in sdblosom. And more fool me for not knowing YesAsia sold illegal DVDs. Do all internet DVD sites sell illegal copies? This is a pity because it's the only place I can get hold of the movies I want to watch. Price isn't the issue (regardless of the fact that I live in a country where they routinely over-price their DVDs, expecially foreign made movies). They're just not available in the high street.

reply

Why did you think the DVD's and such were so cheap on YesAsia.com? 'Cause
they are all homemade copies. You can find legal ones. But if you are in such a hurry to watch it and want to save money, I guess you can't complain, can you?

reply

It's not a case of saving money. It's a case of not being able to buy them any where other than the internet. Besides, if the only criteria for knowing whether they're illegal copies or not is the price charged, that would mean that all copies sold in China are fake as they're only 15 yuan. And the same in America. It must mean that you can only buy real DVDs in the UK as they're so expensive. But then, here's the rub, they're not for sale in the UK!

There really was no need to be so rude about what was obviously a mistake on Sally's part. It's clear she didn't realize the dvds were boot leg and she stated that herself. A bit snippy, aren't we?

I didn't say that all cheap DVD's were illegal, just that YesAsia is notorius for selling illegal crapy DVD's. (But yes, most unusually cheap DVDs and clothing are illegaly sold in China, not all, but a lot) Don't take this personally, I'm not, I just don't think you should complain. So now that you know what's going on, there is on reason to bicker, right?

reply

and honestly, I'm glad you made ME wise to what goes on at YesAsia.com because I really enjoy asian cinema and could easily have fallen prey to them without knowing.

Tell you what though, it's still a good film, even with crappy sound. I'll just have to wait and see whether CD-Wow get it in stock as I think they're kosha. But until then.....

Actually, if you haven't made a second order elsewhere. I'd suggest you to go here:

http://www.kino.com/video/item.php?film_id=126

This is the DVD version I own, and it is one of the best version one can find so far. It features a remastered transfer and the rare making-of video, "Buenos Aires Zero Degrees" =)

As far as I'm concern YesAsia don't really sell illegal DVDs. It's just that there are many, many versions of original DVDs out there. for example, hongkong version, Taiwanese version, or even Chinese version (you get the picture). The one that you got from YesAsia (I think) isn't illegal, it's just a legal chinese version (which has inferior quality compared to say, hong kong version -> thus the cheap price tag). For us who live in Asia, distinguishing versions of DVDs comes naturally, since we are already used to be exposed with so many versions of original and bootleg DVDs. My suggestion is, before you buy asian DVDs, make a comparison between those sold in Yesasia (Chinese, taiwanese, hong kong, japanese and korean versions) and in say, amazon (US version).

For example, for 'In the mood for love', I bought the US criterion collection version because it's the BEST version out there (as compared to the original Hong Kong version). But let's say for "taegukgi hwinalrimyeo / brotherhood", I bought the massive 5-discs limited edition Japanese version from Amazon Japan because it's even better than the original korean version (its origin).

When the movie '2046' was released, I bought the inferior (but still original) mainland chinese version DVD from yesasia. obviously, it's cheap and crappy; but usually, mainland china is the first country to release DVD titles (to beat those pirates, obviously - since piracy is massive in china). as s result, their DVDs has no special features, no mastering, nada. but since I was so eager to watch the movie ASAP, I have to get the mainland chinese version. About 2 months afterwards, hong kong released its 2-discs limited edition 2046 DVD. I was thrilled, and I bought that (thinking that it's the ultimate edition). but what did I know. recently, Australia released the 3-discs limited edition 2046 DVD with limited edition tin box casing; the best of its kind i've seen so far. guess what, I got that too, because I'm such a fan of wong kar-wai. hahaha.

You see, sometimes you just have to wait until the BEST version comes up.

Wow, you're dedicated!

I was aware of the difference in copies, and often I still buy the cheap versions when I lack funds. I'd never thought of doing so much searching around for the best copy though. Good advice.

I have the Australian tin version of 2046 (because I live in Australia) and it is 2 disks!

I use Yesasia.com all the time and have never run into that problem. I buy lots of DVDs from yesasia and they look and sound professional. I dont know, did you explain your problem to yesasia? they would be the best people to ask about the problem.

reply

You guys can try olivefilms.com too. It's a decent online DVD shopping site (and cheaper from amazon) with collections of rare films that some, if not most, you don't even know they're exist. I bought my ITMFL Criterion and WKW box set there and everything's fine.

Maybe the absence of signs is a sign

I sent it back to Yesasia.com and got a replacement but that was just as bad. Then I bought one from cd-wow.com, and would you believe that was just as awful! I sent that one back too. (I notice they no longer sell it.) Anyways, I found it for sale in one of the large high street music/dvd stores. So I bit the bullet and bought it. It sounds just fine. Fourth time lucky, eh!
