Both directors have made gay films and both won awards. I posted a topic in 'Brokeback Mountain' asking what 'if' it was WKW that made 'Brokeback Mountain', would it be as breath-taking as what Ang Lee has done as well? Or better? Others don't think so and how about you? What do you think?
Don't know much about either, but... if you want more people to join the discussion, might I suggest that you post this message board on an Ang Lee movie as he's more popular?
Well let's just compare Happy Together to Brokeback Mountain. I think Wong Kar Wai can capture the human condition better than any film maker alive and his visual style is one of the best out there for my buck.
I posted the original post before watching Brokeback Mountain. Now that I have seen it, I really have to say I love this film to bits! Ang Lee has really done a good job. It is breath-taking and the feeling, emotion really lingers....heart-breaking...
I am still trying to picture how would the film be if it was actually WKW that was making Brokeback Mountain. I have to really agree with you that WKW captures the human condition better as well as the visual style too. But in Brokeback Mountain (In my opinion, really is a Classic), Ang Lee did a very good job in both areas too (although different)!
I guess this is really a very difficult question. Both directors have got their own styles and thus being successful in film making in their own ways!
Happy Together feels amazingly "authentic" and intimate. Happy Together and Come Undone are my favorite films about gay love. More importantly, they make me feel utterly alive and happy as a gay person. Brokeback Mountain is and does the opposite.
If Wong Ka Wai made Brokeback Mountain, there certainly would be fewer dialogues and more staring scenes and people doing mundane stuff like walking around, talking on phones and emoting intensely while doing so.
And it certainly won't follow the original novel as closely since Wong Ka Wai work without a script and change his mind constantly and he likes to let his actors do their own improvisation.
Kar-Wai Wong would've made the pacing better. If they would've just replaced Lee with him and kept the DP and the rest of the crew, 'Brokeback' would've been a much more realized film. Just my opinion though. I like Ang Lee a lot too. Not as much as Wong, however.
