I appreciate that the ambiguity is deliberate and allows many interpretations, but what do you think Fai said on the recorder?
I'm thinking:
- Fai declared his love for Chang (maybe not so explicitly, but something along those line)
- Fai was just crying throughout
- Fai was talking about his personal sadness/grief.
My take is that Lai Yiu Fai didn't say anything. He held the recorder for some time before breaking down. He doesn't seem like the type of person who can easily verbalize his feelings...

I didn't interpret the scene as him saying anything into the recorder. He was just sobbing, which was his way of expressing how miserable he felt
sharechang said at the end of the movie that he didn't hear fai saying anything, but heard him sobbing. so, i guess he left Fai's troubles at the light house.
