Is it just me......

Ok, I really really liked this movie, but is it just me or does there seem to be a bit of an exaggeration in the size of the gay-Chinese population in....Argentina? I mean, there were a lot of 'em!

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal labotomy.

Have you ever heard of a gadget called "Gaydar" ?

I think you're mistaken. There are exactly two gay Chinese men in the film. The rest of the gay men in the film are not Chinese.

reply

What about Chang?

I never could decide if he was gay or not - whether what linked him with Fai was pure friendship or something more...

Any thoughts?

Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

reply

Well, they never 'did' anything with each other,
Chang could be gay seeing as how he ignored the girl in the restaurant.
However, it is never totally clear whether he was gay or not.
Moreover, I don't know why that person says there are so many gay Chinese in Argentina since it was just Fai and Po and they both left HK together.

reply

The only other Chinese (or at least some Asian race) that I noticed besides Po Wing and Fai were all the tourists coming off the bus going into the tango bar- and also when Fai was trying to take a picture all those Asian tourists and getting frustrated since they weren't staying still.

Since seeeing the film, I've had a desire to visit South America and I never had before. It's funny to see where people from abroad like to vacation....never thought about Asians taking holiday in South America.

Why is seeing Asians go to South America funny?

reply

Maybe funny is a bad choice of word...I guess it's because I'm unaware of what goes on between other continents besides North America. In the U.S. we aren't exposed to global issues unless we're involved in them, even the media dosen't really talk about South America very much, unless it relates to drugs or war. So this film really showed a different angle of South America for me- that it could be an actual place to vacation, versus a place of corruption and crime. I think it's cool that Asians (and I guess Europeans also) visit South America for vacation.

reply

This film does not depict "South America". It depicts Argentina, one of twenty different, independent countries in that continent. Argentina is as different from its neighbour, Brazil, as France is different from its neighbour, Germany.

Latin America in general is a huge tourist destination, because it's cheap and the weather is great.

Most of this movie takes place in the capital city of Argentina, Buenos Aires, the most European and culturally endowed city in the Southern hemisphere.

Iguazú Falls are in the north of the country, on the border with Brazil. Ushuaia and its famous light house, where Chang goes, is the capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego, in the Southern extremity of Patagonia. Ushuaia is the southernmost town in the world.

Argentina has a long and distinguished cinematic tradition going back to silent days. You might enjoy renting some Argentine movies. They are often very good.

Just to tell you that there are TONS of Asian and European tourists who come to South America every year! People from USA seem to prefer calm vacations in the Caribbean or so. Europeans and Asian tend to look for cultural vacation.
By the way...I am South American and I say that because I have friends form those pleces who have told me so.

reply

And there are plenty of Korean and Vietnamese immigrants in Buenos Aires.

what?? for your information South America has many tourists from all around the world ..mainly for the culture and also the huge diversity of beautiful natural sceneries ..you have mountains, beaches, forests, jungles, deserts, lakes, waterfalls, etc. anything you can imagine ..for instance in my country Chile (which is next to Argentina) ..have come to visit us people like Julia Roberts and Prince Harry from England to spend their vacations.

of course here is corruption and crime but just like in every place in the world ..or is there no corruption in USA specially ????

and it's absolutely not strange at all to see asian people in Southamerica ..in Chile's big cities i always can see asian tourists with their cameras taking pictures and also you'll find chinese restaurants everywhere...

so you really might need a little update.

I'm an American and I'd give ANYTHING to be able to vacation in the places Americans don't usually travel to (starting with Cuba, which can't be 400 miles from where I live yet I'm not allowed to go, arrgh), but I'm afraid, because our government's foreign policies have not exactly endeared us to the rest of the world. When I finally get my son raised, I'm going to teach English somewhere, and I might never come back here. I love movies like Happy Together in which people just travel somewhere and get stuck there.

Chang wasn't gay.

There's a scene where Chang tells Fai what kind of girls he likes, and then asks Fai what Fai likes in a girl. Fai doesn't answer.

Also, a deleted storyline involved Chang pursuing a girl he saw on a train.

Yeah, the only gay Chinese I remember are Lai and Ho. Chang isn't gay, he's just a good listener...
