It's funny- I love how the two characters just so happen to be gay, but the film is not about "being gay" (i.e. coming out, discrimination etc.) at all.
I've come to think that this was just Wong Kar-Wai's way of getting these two particular (fantastic) actors together in this story in that setting- he just made them gay. Genius.

Apparently one of them didn't even know about the explicit scenes until he got into argentina. He was given a fake script that he agreed to.
