Wtf? *spoilers*

I can't get over the ending of this movie, with Holden suggesting a three way with Alyssa and Banky.

First of all, I get that he felt inexperienced and wanted to be on the same level as Alyssa, but as a straight dude, why would he wanna bring a guy into bed with them, least of all his best friend? Alyssa was gay anyway, so again, as a straight guy, why not suggest another woman? As a supposedly "conservative" guy, I can't believe that he would be so blasé about sex with a man.

Banky's reaction was weird too. Supposing he was gay, and in love with/attracted to Holden, why would he agree to share him with Alyssa? And supposing he wasn't gay, as Kevin Smith claims was the case, then he should have been downright appalled by Holden's suggestion.

Finally, Alyssa took it unusually well. If my boyfriend suggested a three way with me and his best friend, who I didn't even like and who didn't like me, I'd say "Hell no!" and slap him a lot sooner than she did. Also, she seemed to know what he was getting at before he said it. How the hell did she guess that that was what he had in mind?

Maybe I'm just too narrow-minded but that whole ending seemed completely unrealistic.

Yes it is unrealistic, but the whole movie really is a thesis on sexual naivete.

It resonated with me when it came out as i was about the same age as the characters and rather naive myself about relationships and sexuality.

However, I can't see anyone over the age of 12 these days taking this movie seriously, and that's a good thing. We have actually matured as a society when it comes to understanding homosexuality and gender identity in general.

Or maybe I'm just older and understand life better. Who knows? But when I watch this movie now it comes off amazingly infantile considering how much I loved it then.

We all guessed it.

Can't stop the signal.

Because it had been obvious that, though he loved her wild side, he felt he had to catch up rather than accepting their differences. Which is sort of what the whole film is about.

Go back and watch the scene again because Holden clearly explains his reasons for wanting it, down to the very detail.

Banky had been his best friend for a long while and they were at a point of conflict for the first time in their friendship. Holden also admits to being attracted to Banky, and assumes that Banky is probably attracted to him as well. So his idea would be to resolve the conflict between him and Banky, while at the same time admitting attraction to one another, while at the same time gaining the sexual experience to not feel inferior to Alyssa, and at the same time, solve the conflict between Banky and Alyssa.

I see this in the movie, but it doesn't make any sense. How the hell did he come to this conclusion? Moreover, the fact that Banky said yes? That seems like a total betrayal of the character. I was really into this movie, but the ending nearly ruined it for me. I just don't think that this was the way to end the movie. It seems utterly ridiculous. I respect your opinion on it, but I just don't see how or why Kevin Smith decided that this wacky, unrealistic, out of left field ending was the best way to end his mostly grounded, interesting movie.

Both Holden and Banky were bisexual (atleast to some extent), more towards women on the spectrum but not completely straight.

There are numerous gay references made my Banky throughout the movie which point towards this (e.g. he says he understands men being gay because there is d!ck involved but not lesbians, also he says he doesn't want to lose what they have been building together, Holden and him, for many years, and he also says he is not referring to the comic).

We never get to see their lives, so its entirely likely they were attracted to each other sexually to some extent (which explains their living situation, they were living together in a small town, not NYC, they could have easily afforded their own places).

Getting to have a threesome with Alyssa in the middle is about as close to homosexual sex that Banky and Holden want to be. They get to feel each other through her and still claim hetro bragging rights.

Alyssa knew what Holden was going to suggest as he is very insecure about his lack of experience (or Alyssa's abundance of it) and wants to even the score. I could see it coming as well.

Banky's reaction is almost like hedging his bets, if he says "Sure" than he gets to have a threesome if Alyssa agrees, if he says "No" than any possibility is dead. In the end it is just a chance to have sex for him. Remember some of that 3some time would be spent just him and Alyssa 1-1 while Holden watches.

The interesting thing would be what if Alyssa said yes? Would Holden be able to handle the idea of his girlfriend having sex with his friend? I don't think he is secure enough for that even though it was his suggestion.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.

Hmm. After reading your post, I now feel like Banky's decision was more about Alyssa than Holden, and that makes it all more believable. I need to go back and see this movie again with that in mind.

Holden's decision, I could always kind of see where he was coming from. It was Banky that threw me.
