Ha ha. Kevin Smith mentions in the commentary that, at the time of its release, older people saw it as a Jaws reference, and younger people saw it as a Lethal Weapon reference.

I'm young, 27 and it is 100% a Jaws reference. Nothing to do with Lethal Weapon.

Yes, but I mentioned they said it was at the time of its release (1997) when Lethal Weapon was fresher in younger audience's heads than Jaws.
