Sad Jasmine Guy didn't do her own singing...

Jasmine Guy's self-titled album is one of my all-time favorites and when I saw that she was in this movie, I was looking forward to hearing her sing again. Then I found out that Sawyer's songs were performed by Natalie Cole. I read in the trivia on this page that the movie had already been 90% completed by the time Jasmine was cast, so I guess Natalie had already recorded the songs by that point. Not that I have anything against Natalie Cole, I just would have liked to hear Jasmine sing again.

This has always annoyed me. Guy and Cole sound ZERO alike. Even as a child I thought it was pretty stupid.

Natalie Cole was hired first. I forget who was hired to play the original speaking voice (*edit* looked it up, it was Nancy Giles), but it wasn't Jasmine Guy. She was brought in to do the dialogue long after the songs were all done.

As much as I enjoy Ms. Guy's singing, I don't think she could've pulled off "Tell Me Lies" the way Natalie did. Also, Ms. Cole, being of... royal blood, as it were, kind of enhanced the film as a tribute to golden age Hollywood. I can honestly say I wouldn't change a thing.
