Is it me or the main death could have very easily been averted?

He could have waited inside the building for a couple of hours without running from one place to another. He could have survived.

He was looking for Dora. But, yeah.

Depends. The Germans were killing everybody they could find. No doubt a lot of them were trying to hide but being found. At the end the number of prisoners who walk out of the camp is a lot less than the normal number that were in the camp.

He also had no idea how long it would be before the Germans left. It could have been days instead of hours.
