Did he intentionally get his ass handed to him in the first fight just to feel the pain?
What's the use for one to gain the whole world, yet lose his soul?
I don't think so. I think the most important thing he wanted to show was that he couldn't be knocked down. He lost, but he was so tenacious about staying in the fight to the end, that it was almost like he won anyway - the crowd still cheered him at the end.
