Were they kind of a couple? I've always been confused about what their relationship is. They live together but sleep in different rooms. They vacation together. I don't think their relationship is explained anywhere in the movie.
Any thoughts?
It may be that jack simply wasn't interested in Amber in that way.
Don't forget he also had Rollergirl living there so his house could simply be used as a 'drop centre' for the people in his life that couldn't get thier act together to have an apartment on thier own.
Good point. I wonder if Dirk didn't stay there for a while too when he left his crazy mom.

shareI've actually been thinking about this today as I watched the movie again last night.
I feel like they maybe had a brief relationship but now have moved into the maternal/paternal roles of their little porn family. Roller Girl and Dirk are "the kids."
But... I also wondered if Jack wasn't maybe gay? I know Burt never intentionally played him that way, but... it seems there, under the surface maybe? We never see him with any women, other than next to Amber.
I do wish these back stories were better developed, and perhaps they were in the 3 hour original version.

It is a little odd. He seems to be almost a father figure to them. But he's surrounded by beautiful women, and never takes an interest in any of them romantically, it seemed.
But the movie never really hints at why, as far as I could tell. All you can do is guess. Maybe he suffered an injury in the Korean war. Maybe he had prostate cancer at some point.
