I mean, pretty bad. to the point where he wasted a lot of his money on coke. but todd and reid were bad too, just that dirk got really hooked t the point where he was even strung out, crashing his car. being mean to everyone even pimping himself out. 1982-1984 seem to be at his worst.
sharesince this was all loosely based on John Holmes his struggles with his addictions were well known in the early 80's. Check out the Val Kilmer movie Wonderland which i think is a pretty good bookend to Boogie Nights further showing the decline of Holmes through his drug addiction.

Seen it on the big screen here in philly, good movie,, and yes a darker book end no doubt. I was lucky enough to see it in a theater since a lot of theaters didn't get it..and holmes fell hard for sure..
