Who sings the a cappella version of the song "John the Revelator" in the opening credits when Elwood gets out of prison? please tell me if you know...

Taj Mahal

Don't know who did the original, it was either Taj Mahal or Son House. Probably Son House as he is as old as the blues itself.

On the soundtrack, Son House, the original author, starts John the Revelator a capella, then comes the spiced up version of the film.

Wrong, DUMBASS! Son House died in 1988.
It was Taj Mahal, who also has a cameo in the film.

Taj Mahal, Sam Moore, Joe Morton, Sharon Riley and the Faith Chorale sing it. (I have the whole soundtrack :)))

the original question is who sang the OPENING SONG, where Elwood is standing outside the prison.

you just named who sang the extended version in the Revival tent scene.
(and didn't the (now late) Good Rev Cleophus join in on that as well?

I always thought James Brown did the acapella version at the beginning of the movie.
