Ghost Riders

I've Got a Question
Who's the artist that originally sing s Ghost Riders in the sky???/

Please help

reply

This was originally sung by Vaughn Monro, for whom it was a #1 pop hit in 1949. It was also a #2 country hit for Johnny Cash in 1979.
The words and music to the song are by Stan Jones.

Hope this helps.

I don't know about originally, but I have an excellent mp3 of Ghost Riders in the Sky done by Outlaws. Be glad to send it to anyone who wants it, MSN messanger ID [email protected]

Glad to see someone else saw this thread.
For what it's worth, "Originally" means originally! The Outlaws version, as far as I can tell, dates from 1980. It is on their "Ghost Riders" album released on Arista.

yes, I am well aware of what "Originally" means... my point was that at the time I did not know who had done it originally and was offering an alternative to anyone that cared... and I have had several requests for that mp3 since. But since you want to make such a point of it, then I should point out that it is incorrect to say that Vaughn Monroe (and that is the correct spelling, there is an "e" at the end since you wish to be so technical) recorded the song "originally" since Vaughn Monroe, Peggy Lee, Bing Crosby, and Burl Ives all recorded it the same year, his version just happened to be the one that hit #1 (Peggy Lee's hit #2, Bing Crosby got #14, and Burl Ives went to #21)

Ace, hey, I made a sincere and pretty accurate effort to answer the guy's question, and then you come along with your "I don't know about the original...", despite the fact that I had just written about the original, thus apparently dismissing my efforts out of hand. OK, I realize now that you didn't mean it like that, and that you were just offering up an MP3, good for you!
I was interested to hear that those other major performers also had hits in the same year with the song, but I'm confident that Mr. Monroe (did I get it right that time? - I have to admit that last time I was concentrating on spelling 'Vaughn' correctly) was the first to have a hit with it. I know that Peggy Lee's effort came 2 weeks later, but can't pin down the others. I expect you will.

Alright, I have the final answer. Ghost Riders was originally recorded by Burl Ives, however, after it was finished, someone played it for Vaughn Monroe, who liked it so much that he made a rush recording of the song himself and released it before Ives' version could be released. So it was originally recorded by Ives, but released by Monroe. However, the song was also sung by Gene Autry in the 1949 movie "Riders in the Sky", which was released November 29, 1949, so I don't know if Gene Autry might have sang it for the movie even before Burl Ives recorded it. The information was from a short biography of Stan Jones at this link http://www.westernmusic.org/HallOfFamefiles/StanJones.html

I need to hear that Burl Ives original of 'Ghost Riders.' And his later version. I like his voice. And also I want to own the version by Peggy Lee, my favourite singer.

Does anyone know of a video clip showing the Ghost Riders part of the Blues Brothers 2000 movie? Just a short clip will do.
