What was the significance of Mrs. Chan's leg?

In one scene, Mrs. Chan is walking down the hallway after spending some time with Mr. Chow. Amah stops her in the hallway and asks, "Mrs. Chan, is your leg alright?" to which Mrs. Chan responds, "It's these new shoes". When Mrs. Chan gets to her room, she hikes up and her skirt and looks over her leg. I didn't understand the meaning behind that. Anybody got an interpretation?

From what I understand watching this scene, Mrs. Chan had stayed at Mr. Chow's apartment for a long time (nearly one day). During the time she was there, because she was afraid of getting caught, and partly from their both nature of holding back the feelings for each other, she did not get to properly lie down to rest her leg.

Besides, when she was at Mr. Chow's apartment, she wore the high heel shoes for a long period, because she wanted to be ready to leave whenever she get a chance (she and Chow were waiting for the hostess to finish playing Mahjong). Thus, her leg hurts.

The neighbour commented on her legs because she was walking in an awkward way, and she was walking that way because she was wearing the other wife's shoes - that's why the high heel shoes were small and uncomfortable. She was wearing those high heels because she needed to pretend that she had come come outside: she had gone to Chow's room wearing slippers (remember the pink slippers they focused on under his bed?).
