Brief Encounter

The two films are quite similar, aren't they?

They are. I just happened to see these two movies really close together and I didn't even think about the similarities.

Thats what I was thinking when I watched it. I also found similarities in the visual style to Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats the Soul. Particularly in the framing of the characters .

I think it's wonderful that In the Mood for Love has these similarities. I mean this is a great example of what happens when you tranfer a genre typical for the western world to the east; they internalize it and create something new. WKW was able to create such amazing atmospheres and use that beautiful narrative we are familiar with Hollywood films in 1930-40's. No one makes films like these anymore, except WKW one time. And since the film deals with memories and past I think it's the references to the classics are brilliant.

I was going to start my own thread until I read this one.

I felt that there were similarities between this and Brief Encounter too. They were slightly more open about their feelings in In the Mood for Love. And the ending in this film was more open to interpretation
- did they consumate their affair?
- whose child is it?
- were Mr Chow and Mrs Chan on their own or back with their spouses at the end?

With Brief encounter, there were no unanswered questions - just what might have beens.

Interesting, I saw these movies within the same week, three movies apart. I suppose there are some similarities, although the relationship was more of a direct affair in Brief Encounter even if it didn't go too far and. It was more hidden and platonic (due to them being cautious about themselves) in In the Mood for Love. But otherwise, there are a lot of similarities... At first when I saw this topic I thought they weren't overly similar, but I guess the more I think about it, I see more similarities.

I was thinking the same thing - I thought Brief Encounter was much more interesting because it had more action and we actually met the spouses. In Brief Encounter you understood that both people and their spouses were decent people, so no matter what happened, it would be a tragedy.
