So is itthe servents fault that he's the Beast!

Ok the way i'm looking at this is. Here you are the Prince in this massive castle, your about 11-12 with no parents to speak of in a house with no people your age, presumably. And a bunch of servents to do your bidding. Another thing is your simi-illeterate and you have a massive library with every book in human existance...remember this! Now even with this massive cascade of books your servents choose to give you for christmas...a book which you don't need. It's also story book indicating it's for kids younger then 11-12, so prehaps there in there own words insulting the fact he can't read for his age. in retrospect it is a bit of a crap present, so no wonder he was pissed off at the time and went on to insult the enchantress...and turned into a beast

Or he's grown up with wealth, power, ego and a sense of entitlement, all of which combine to make one bratty prince. Illiteracy isn't an excuse to never read, it's a very good reason to learn - a book would have been an ideal gift. He's a spoiled kid who sees things at their face value, or only in terms of what they can do for him - that's why he was cursed.

he wasn't grown up. He would remain a beast forever if he didn't fall in love by his 21st bday, and they had been under the spell for 10 years when Belle came.

The Broadway musical version explains that was the very reason that the castle staff was also enchanted along with the prince since they shared the blame for his behavior.
