Parallels with "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier"?

BATMAN & ROBIN had the same problem that THE FINAL FRONTIER had, which is a specific director having too much say, too much control, over a franchise movie. THE VOYAGE HOME also qualifies, despite its having been a financial success. Creatively, TVH is absolute *beep* There's no getting around it - it's a bad movie. Almost invariably, this happens when a director is allowed to make 'his' movie, after having done a good job working hand-in-hand with the studio. BATMAN RETURNS did such phenomenal things with the Catwoman character, I truly am in awe of this movie, for that very reason. But everything else kind of sucks, but again, that's a situation of Tim Burton having done a good job with the first BATMAN, that now, he's given the keys.

Actually Shatner didn't really like or want to have all the comic relief in TFF, that was something the studio pushed for, although he also didn't seem to mind it too much. The studio also pushed to make B&R very light, Schumacher didn't insist on it but he also didn't mind going along and doing that style.

It makes sense that studios more often than directors would want a sequel to have a lot more of what seemed to make the previous film work.
