People started to refer to Carlos as "the Jackal" after Frederick Forsyth's thriller novel "The Day of the Jackal" (dealing with a professional assassin called "The Jackal") was found among his belongings. In 1973, Forsyth's novel was also made into a movie, which was then remade in 1997 starring Richard Gere and Bruce Willis.
