So I have heard that this is supposedly based on the early years of Mariah Careys life. How much of that is true? Does anyone know?

No, none at all. She was not orphaned as a child. Her parents split when she was three. After that she was raised by her mother. Her mother is Irish and her father was black and venezuelan. And as for her career, not even close. She started as a back-up singer for Brenda K. Starr. Went to a party where she handed Tommy Mottola a demo tape. He listened to it in his limo on the ride home, turned around to find Mariah, she was gone, later he tracked her down and signed her.
