Why is the Earth ruined at the end?

After landing back on Earth, Ripley and the survivors look around and notice that it is a wasteland of ruins. Is there any official explanation for this?

reply

It has been a while, but wasn’t this the result of the USM Auriga crashing into earth in an effort to wipe out the Alien-Ripley Clone hybrid?

reply

Wouldn't the survivors also be destroyed if that was the case?

reply

I think they took the smaller bounty hunter/smuggler ship off the Auriga before the crash and then landed after. Hmm, now I feel like rewatching this.

Is this a scene in the extended version? I just watched the theatrical and they don't land on earth.

This is the ending in my copy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnmMksVK8pY

Admittedly, it does say alternative ending. Maybe I've screwed up in that, it's not the 'official' ending but we never beyond AR anyway.

reply

Thanks. That's definitely not in the version I have, marked "Theatrical Version". Kind of a nothing scene, really.

reply

Oh shoot. It's not the real ending? That explains why it makes no sense whatsoever. Thanks buddy.

The "Special Edition" has this ending and runs 6-7 minutes longer than the theatrical... which I barely remember seeing, so I thought I remembered it ending the same way.
