great performances , but to me it felt that the murder conspiracy was added on as an extra to the plot to maybe get it a wider audience ? The film should have focussed more on wade and his father .

Also why did wade and his girlfriend move to his fathers farm in the 1st place?

It didnt really seem to have any bearing on how the film developed.

Also the sound quality on the DVD was appalling , i could barely hear the dialog and there was no subtitles.

Easy way to answer all of the above: Read the novel.
The thing with this movie is that it left alot of plot points out. In the book, Wade's obsession with the case, his *beep* childhood, his *beep* life (plus his bitchy ex-wife), etc. are all basically showing how a person that a small town beleives would "never acheive murder" can be driven to insanity.

I think it's a pretty good book, personally.

[They move in with Pop because Margie wanted to take care of him. Plus after Pop would die, Wade would get the house. Another one of his little day dreams that fails horridly.]
