Nolte

How Nolte lost the Academy Award for best actor is beyond comprehension. Hanks was very good also BUT I tjought Nolte performance made the entire movie. The winner of that category is beyond belief. Sad, VERY sad.

Ha. Can you imagine Tom Hanks taking this kind of role? No way. If he did, he would have it re-written so that his dad sobers up and he and Meg Ryan(who would replace Sissy Spacek)end up together.

Once more, it just goes to show that the Academy Awards are popularity contests and not about merit (Nolte was equally good in MOTHER NIGHT, and was similarly ignored).

As the other poster said, can you imagine the so-called versatile Tom Hanks playing Nick Nolte's part, or what an awful job a director like Ron Howard would do with Banks' material (he'd turn one of the most unsentimental novels ever written into sentimental pap).

nolte wasnt acting though

This Bellini is starting to look like a real Kapuchnik.

wasn't acting? he was amazing, especially if you are from a dysfunctional family and have lived thru some of this movie....I sat parked spellbound in front of the TV screen.....

reply

Agreed.

Between this movie, Nightwatch and The Thin Red Line, I would be afraid to be in the same room with him...

Always ask yourself :"What would Neil Patrick Harris do ?"

I've already praised his acting enough on two other threads today, so I'll just say I agree 100% that he deserved the win.

reply

Agree. Best actor.

Nick Nolte's loss that year to Roberto Benigni has to go down as one of the biggest upsets for acting awards in Oscar history. I am a fan of Nolte and I remember reading countless reviews of the movie which all predicted his getting the Oscar as a slam dunk. I was concerned because Benigni had also won the SAG award that year, but I was certainly hoping that the Acadamy would do the right thing. Ironically, it was not even the biggest upset of that evening. That was the year that "Shakespeare In Love" beat out "Saving Private Ryan" for Best Picture.
