I know Sissy Spacek's character left Wade coz he was...

turning into his father but she left a bit too suddenly. She didn't even try to work through this and make everything how it was. Maybe it wouldn't have worked but she should have tried. That's the power of love. It was wrong of her to do what she did. It's like if a woman's boyfriend recently got scars on his face she would leave him.

he was being a sissy and she was spaced

she had to CARRIE the film but basically i think she left at the NICK of time

reply

hahahaha

The Power of Love is not very practical. I don't know if any woman would like to be sucked into a relationship where she will end up being a victim if she realises on time.
She did not want to become what Wade's mom was...

Plus that being a small town and them probably having been together for awhile helped push her out the door. When she realized how much of an insensitive brute the senior Whitehouse was then saw Wade starting to display those same traits, she knew it was time to go.

reply

What the heck. LoL.

reply

when he physically pushed her i think it was time to go. people dont regress once they physically abuse someone

This Bellini is starting to look like a real Kapuchnik.

OP, you could be right. I think Schrader was pressed for time so he had to make something happen drastic in that scene. But also i was thinking, maybe something happened to her inside -- maybe the dad did somehting to her and we just didnt see that. They should never have let the dad move in with them anyhow - they should have done a monster's ball (see it if you dont know what im talkin about).

reply

His father has been verbally harassing her in a few earlier scenes. Something must have happened between his father and her inside the house that she couldn't take it any more. She was crying and seemed like she could not tell him. I would not be surprised if his father tried to molest or rape her.

reply

I think just what he said to her was bad enough that there does not need to be anything we did not see.

It was the salt. Wade was constantly licking salt. She saw his father do it and she bailed. Symbolism.

reply

I was wondering why she left so suddenly too. Its not like Wade did anything to her. She didn't even tell him about what his father was like with her, so why blame him for everything in the end?

reply

Yeah honestly, while the father was the worst, his girlfriend, ex-wife, and daughter were all pretty stupid too. very ignorant and non symp/empathetic. Still it doesn't take too much away from the film as they are realistic in their stupidity. I also found the monologue from Dafoe at the end to be a bit tacked on.

I lived in New England for a time and small towns can get like that, when they turn on U, it's no joke!

Spoiler alert for them spoil sports out there! Y'all like spoiled milk, stop crying over it!
