I watched this movie twice. The first time from the beginning til the middle and I just couldn't see where it was going. Then I saw the middle through the end and
i saw that indeed it really didn't go too far.
I thought the story was kind of boring but Coburn and Nolte were excellent with what they were given; I mean I watched it because it was so critically acclaimed. It was just too boring.
i think the performances were good but i could see how you thought it was slow. i like it but it seems like an acquired taste

i always want to like this movie, but i never do. i've watched it probably 5 times in the past 10 years. it could have gone somewhere, and I believe Banks' book went somewhere. Poor direction? Any movie that falls back on dialogue recaps via voice-over (which happens twice with Nolte's character) usually is missing something. Not sure why it was so acclaimed, other than the acting. The story is just so uninteresting. Great cast though.

I actually giggled when the little girl (!) wrestled Nick Nolte (!) to the ground. I mean, give me a break. All the praise for this film must come from a parallel world or something, because it seems totally insane to me.

No depth? IMHO, you aren't paying attention. BTW - if the movie seems insane, then it is getting the point across to you.

The ending was a little rushed up to the rest of the movie.

Yeah, this is me. I give it a 7/10 which is right at its average; I suspect though that that is made up more of a pile of 9s and 10s along with some 4s and 5s. For me it had some really good acting but the script was a bit lackluster (I've had this problem with other Schrader films) and the cinematography was not amazing considering the setting (The Sweet Hereafter, released the same year I believe and adapted from another book by the same author, had a much more impressive look).

Agree with JLargo. It's a minor masterpiece. I had a quibble with why it took him so long to go over the line in his life finally.

I just found it too depressing. I remember thinking they should all just slit their wrists and get it over with. Put them out of their/my misery.
