Why the last scene

Why didn't they stop the movie at the double suicide??

reply

becasue they wanted you to understand what impact Mr. Garfield had and it needed a better closing then that

reply

You don't expect a Hollywood movie to end without at least a Message of Hope, do you?

reply

Doesn't matter if it had a message of hope or not. The ending was probably one of the most utterly depressing I've ever seen. It's films like this that almost make you lose your faith in humanity.

BTW, why was Ellen clearing her desk and binning her teachers degree?

reply

Cuz she had lost her faith in humanity. Her desire to teach had been burned out, so she left.

reply

very very sad...makes me wanna become and teacher and do my thing...

reply

when she explains at the end about a peeric (spelling?)victory she said that he won two battles against the Romans but at a great cost, the two battles that Garfield won were her and Cesar's friend who you see at the graduation and the cost was his life, that sums up the film i guess, a battle won but at too great a price

Sh*t movie, but I really liked the ending. I respect the director for not selling out.

the loss wasnt his life in the first place, the loss was his idealism, his professional ethics, the basic attitude of being a teacher which is the most important thing in his life, he lost his way, the way he has become before his suicide he wouldnt have been a good teacher anymore, he was broken,

i liked the final, this last scene is very important, he gives his life on the one hand because meanwhile he thinks if he cant teach those boys he has failed and all his affords were useless and on the other hand because he feels guilty, he crossed a line, he knows that, he feels that he owes his pupils not to give them up, still what he does in the last scene isnt really heroic, but at least its kind of desperate last penance and the last gleaming of his teachers idealism,

reply

he should have plate the russian roulet with the whole gang so they all die :@ none of those students deserve a second chance !!

reply

When the second bullet was put in the gun... I was expecting Garfield to kill the 2 kids holding guns.

That would have kicked major ass.

reply

Hahaha oh my god you're so right, I never even thought of that. Now that would be a surprise ending. And fitting of Sammy Jackson.

reply

Watjibbit hit the nail right on the head, i loved this movie and couldnt believe it got such a low score however i guess that i can relate to the themes and the idea of a lesson learnt thats not worth the price paid.

i'm not sure that would work out as well. i seriously think it needed more closure than that.
