Did Garfield really kill Benny?

I know that in the end of the film, Caesar asks Garfield if he did and Garfield acknowledges it but the principle and/or coroner says that Benny had a morphine overdose.

If he really did kill Benny, would have have used that tranquilizer he made that he claimed as morphine-based?

Yes he did. The scene after Benny's dead body is shown, we see Garfield walking back to his class with a little smile/smerk on his face. Thats the scene when you know he really did it.
