Timeline of Garfield's stabbing?

Just after Garfield gets stabbed at the NY school, the subtitle says "15 months later".

Then, whilst eating lunch at the LA school where he ius the new temp, Childress says ;-

"When was that [the stabbing]...last fall?" Which suggests that it was a year or less ago?

Garfield says "Um...October".

So, as Childress said, 'what gives'?

It could mean the fall the year before, since it was so close to the one that just ended.
